Dirk Niepoort's family moved to the Douro, Portugal in 1842 from Holland and began making port wine. Now in the 5th generation, Dirk is quite progressive and has pushed to make dry, lower intervention wines. As with traditional Vinho Verde, the wine is bottled unfiltered with a tiny amount of residual sugar so that it can continue fermenting in bottle, giving it a bit of fizz when you first open it. The also gives protection to the wine so no sulphur is added at anytime. The wine is slightly cloudy and extremely refreshing.
