This 100% Merlot hails from the Mounts Bench Vineyard in Dry Creek Valley. Winemaker Darek Throwbridge, has been making low-intervention wines in Sonoma for 20 years in the “old world” style - hence the name - that he learned from his grandfather. Darek’s grandfather, Lino Martinelli - yes, Martinelli of Martinelli cider- started making wine in the early 1900 with no chemicals and no technology - completely natural! Darek keeps this tradition alive with no press, just the feet of him and his friends, and no temperature controlled vessels. Drinking perfectly right now, the 2009 Merlot has subtle signs of aging: tobacco, dried earth with the dark fruit showing flavors of stewed prunes and rich blackberries.
